The kids are getting their letters from colleges, telling them whether or not they’ve been admitted. It’s a process that just stinks. I’ve watched these kids grow up; they’re magnificent and I’m not saying that just because I’m madly in love with each one of them; I’m saying that because it’s true. They do the most interesting things, they put the adults to shame with their energy and ferocity and humor. They have found creative ways to circumvent the weird surveillance measures grown-ups use these days to track every move they make (if you keep candy from a kid, sit back and watch the extraordinary measures to which they will go in the pursuit of sugar). These kiddos are clever.
Father of 3 college grads, the one who I think is best suited for life is the non traditional grad who did it part time while working full time. All thou I has shocked to see him join the military, which is not the best choice for everyone. Shame we don't have programs like the CCC anymore for people to give back to our world before locking them into the academic track.
It is crazy. The crazier thing is parents spending thousands on “college counselors”, and expensive travel on college tours. FFS, we chose our colleges from brochures🤦🏻♀️
The american university system is a capitalist institution. What was once a stepping stone for the formation of this country's (male) elite became a cash cow for both real and (almost) fictive institutions of higher learning. My son is graduating in May and I have spent the past 8 years marveling at and sickened by the elite educational racket in America.
Want to see a better way? Look to Europe with their 5 year, specialized, technical school attitude...here countries have been supporting their children for years! Why? Because all good work is valued. Being a great barmen is respected, being a good plumber is respected, being a good lawyer is, too.
There are many better ways. America, the arrogant is blinded by its gluttony.

I never know where to put the comma either. Thanks for this, Melissa. So true. So poignant. So many paths to success.
